It’s official, you can go to the SAAQ website and order yourself a vanity plate in Quebec.

Of course, the site crashed in the first few hours of service, according to the CBC.

Like any modern government service, this is only available online. And the opening hours are... no, I’m not kidding, the website has opening hours! Requests for plates must be made during the website’s business hours, or they will be rejected. Is this to prevent late- night tomfoolery? Perhaps, because I’ll bet you there are no public servants sitting up and approving these requests until 11pm.

Unfortunately for the idle curious and for outsiders, one must provide identification before requesting a 7-letter plate that says “lamarde ” or “big j nsn” or whatever clever idea you had. This makes it hard for serious users to test the waters as well.

Oh well, it’s not like I had any intention of actually using the service, but it would have been fun to play with nonetheless.

Too bad FCK  ENGLSH doesn't fit.  I wonder how fast someone took Poutine

In New Hampshire you can check availability of any plate online, but you have to request with a paper form in person, then wait any number of weeks to find out if you got it.

No word yet on how many requests were made, or what was requested. It's only been 3 days!

This makes sense, at least you won’t waste time going to the reg office for nothing most of the time.

I suspect that here it will eventually be possible to check availability before identifying, but for now since the system (and the product) is so new, they are trying to keep things simple.

I bet “ poutine” was given out in the very first batch. If not, I’d be shocked.

“ C’est de la merde” is “this is shit”. Y ou’ll often hear simply “la merde” or “la marde” in the local accent . The ‘a’ sounds a bit lower than in “car”, and it sometimed gets stretched out for effect : la maaarde.

That would make  a great plate: maaarde!
